Shelby, sorry for not replying sooner. I had my surgery Nov 18. Unfortunately, something happend with the soft tissue pulling back on the top jaw, and the bite is off so much that I will have to have another MMA. The surgeon is also going to try to repair the nerves by recutting the nerves, and taking a section of nerve from another part of my body and doing a nerve graft repair to my chin/lower lip area.
He said he is only going to advance the upper jaw enough to get the bite lined up this time, and does not intend to work on the lower jaw. I am not looking forward to another six weeks of rubber bands, but it will have to be I suppose. The revision surgery is scheduled for March 22. My sleep is better, and now I dream, which is a wierd experience I must say.

Shelby, it has been six weeks since my MMA surgery. I just had the arch bars removed and I was disappointed because they said my bite was off on both sides. Also, I am really annoyed by my whole lower lip being numb and my chin being numb. The surgeon said that both nerves were damaged during the surgery, one was completely seperated. They repaired both, but said due to my age it was problematic as to whether feeling would come back to my chin and lower lip. This really annoys me as I have found I have food on my chin and lip they I don't know that is there. I am also irritated that something will have to be done to correct the bite issue. Apparently they didn't feel that leaving the arch bars in would solve this problems. I am supposed to go back Jan 19 and he present options on this problem.
I enjoyed your site.

Thanks for writing. I tried to dispute it with my credit card but it didn't work. Well, the way I figure it, if Dude was still alive, if he had survived the procedure, I wouldn't be bummed. So if the vet thought he would make it, I believe him. I do believe the woman who flipped him over and handled him the way she did contributed to his death, but that's just me.

I talked to a vet friend of mine who said technically an abscess is just a "procedure" not real surgery so should not be high risk. Even if you're cutting open half a body, if you're not cutting into organs it's not considered high risk. That being said, when someone brings in a geriatric lizard, or really, when they bring any animal in, you ARE supposed to know ALL the options, and I don't think it is the medical practitioner's place to omit or weight an option just because they don't believe in it. They can always refuse to do the procedure, but I should be well-informed, right?

If I was made of money I wouldn't have thought twice about it, though. So since it was just money, and I KNOW I would KICK myself for not trying to do everything I could to save Dude if someday money wasn't on object, I am looking at the situation as: I did everything I could. It was a crappy experience, but I didn't do anything wrong and that's the bottom line in my heart, right? :)

Someone once told me my cat Mommy (who was 22 when we had to put her down) would get a personal angel devoted to scratching her ears. I hope Dude gets the equivalent in leopard gecko terms...plus the equivalent of chocolate dipped crickets. :)

The way the vet handled this was completely unprofessional, and borders on (if not defines) veterinary malpractice. If I was in your position I would look into some form of recompense.

Jim,
I'm sorry about the numbness. It's not uncommon. I did have trouble with the weird feelings of numbness. To be honest, as I write this I can say that I still have some numbness in my lower lip and definitely inside my mouth on the palate and gums. It takes a long time for nerves to come back. But they do. My doctor gave me neurontin for the nerve pain, but I don't think you're having pain, just really weird feelings? Talk to your surgeon about it. Good luck! It gets better!!!!! How's your sleep? I mean aside from the numbness, is your apnea better? When did you have the surgery?

Shelby, I recently had the MMA. The worst part I hate is that my lower lip, whole chin, and part of the area under my left eye is numb. It is also tingling in these same areas. The surgeon said he had to repair two nerves he cut during the procedure. Did you have problems sleeping due to the wierd feelings in the lip and chin?

Having so much sleep debt is bad so sleep regularly for a few days. Everything will feel a whole lot better afterwards. The last time I had too much sleep debt, it felt like the whole world was collapsing on me and didn't feel satisfied in everything that I did.
